How do I join a project?

In most cases, users are invited to join projects after establishing a good reputation with the project team members. Establishing a reputation with the project team members is usually achieved by providing feedback, logging bug reports and feature suggestions, and uploading source code patches. A: No. This one-time operation is required to associate your Windows Live™ ID account with a CodePlex account. Successive authentications with Windows Live™ ID will automatically authenticate you with CodePlex.

Q: I’m a new user and would like to authenticate with Windows Live™ ID. Do I first need to register with CodePlex and later associate it with my Windows Live™ ID account?
A: No. You can click the Sign In with Windows Live™ ID button on the user registration page. Upon authenticating with Windows Live™ ID, you’ll be redirected back to CodePlex to complete your user registration.

How do I join a project?

In most cases, users are invited to join projects after establishing a good reputation with the project team members. Establishing a reputation with the project team members is usually achieved by providing feedback, logging bug reports and feature suggestions, and uploading source code patches. If the project team values your contributions then they are more likely to accept your request to join the project or even ask for you to join.

Some projects are actively interested in finding new team members, while others are not interested in additional team members. It is a good idea to find this out from the project team before spending time trying to establish a reputation with them with the intent of getting accepted into the project. To contact project team members, click the People tab on any of the project's pages.

How do I start a new project?

To create a new project on CodePlex, use the following form: Create New Project.

Once you fill out the project creation form, your project is created immediately in "Setup" mode. While in setup mode, your project won't be visible to anyone but the project team members. Once you are finished setting up your project, you then "Publish" it to make it visible to all users.

To see the requirements for projects on CodePlex see the following: Project hosting requirements.

How do I change my project's title?

Here are the steps to change your project title:

  1. Log into CodePlex
  2. Go to your project home page
  3. Click the link "Edit Project Summary & Details" located above the project's tabs on the left.
  4. Under title type the new project title. You can also change the project's URL.
  5. Go to the bottom of the page and click "Save"

  • Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL)
  • Microsoft Reciprocal License (Ms-RL)
  • Mozilla Public License 1.1 (MPL)
  • New BSD License
  • The MIT License

If your project requires a license that is not on the list, you can request a custom license using the contact us form.

How do I delete my project's source control history?

How do you change your project from TFS to Mercurial and TFS to Mercurial?

Contact us via: contact us and we'll convert your project for you.
Note: For Mercurial to TFS we cannot bring over work items nor source control history. For TFS to Mercurial we can.

Is it possible to change the ownership of a project?

Yes, it is possible for CodePlex support to change the ownership of a project. Have the user that is to be the new owner be put as a coordinator on the project then contact us via: contact us. In your email state who you wish to be the new project owner.

How can I get continuous integration for my CodePlex project?

  • The CodePlex team has released the CodePlex source control block for continuous integration with your project using CruiseControl.NET. View complete documentation at CodePlexAPI.

If you have already published your project, then use the Contact Us page to request that your project be unpublished so that you can delete it.
Your project's pages should now have a "Delete This Project" button at the top. Click this and your project will be deleted.

Troubleshooting Downloads

If you are using a download manager or download accelerator, try disabling it. Then begin your download again. If the problem persists please contact us using the contact us form.

I can't afford Visual Studio or Team Foundation Server. Can I still use CodePlex?

CodePlex does not require the use of VSTS (and in fact does not require you to own a version of Visual Studio at all). You can download the free Team Explorer Client, which gives you both a command line client (tf.exe) and a stand-alone version of Visual Studio to host the GUI client. For information about obtaining the Team Explorer Client, see Obtaining the Team Explorer Client.

How can I find out about changes to the CodePlex site?

There are two URLs that provide the best information:

  • Recent Updates
  • Issue Tracker

What do I do if I get an error message that the server is down?

Check our system outage report. If the server outage is not reported then contact us!

How do I delete my user account?

Contact us via: contact us and we'll delete your account for you.

Why does CodePlex support non-OSI licenses?

Projects licensed under an OSI-approved license represent the majority of our projects. However, we do allow for broader cases of code sharing which may include the use of academic licenses and other custom licenses.

About Releases

A release is the compiled source code that you can install on your desktop computer, server, or device. Depending upon the project, a release might consist of built binaries, such as dynamic link libraries (dlls) and executable files, configuration files, Web pages, or other program resource files.

For mature projects, there may be many releases to choose from. To determine which of these releases you should download and install, consult the project documentation, readme files (usually provided with every release), or ask a project team member via the People tab.

Download a Release

The following instructions describe how to download project binaries and resource files. Because the installation steps for every project is different, consult the documentation, read-me files (usually provided with every release), or ask a Developer on the project for detailed, project-specific installation and configuration instructions.
To download a release:

  1. Click the project’s Downloads tab.
  2. If the release you want to edit is not displayed, look in the Released list, the Planned list, or the Hidden list in the Other Downloads box.
  3. Select the release you want to download.
  4. Click I agree at the bottom of the license agreement to begin downloading the release, and then select Save to save it to your computer.

Trouble with Downloading

If you are using a download manager or download accelerator, try disabling the manager or accelerator. Then try your download again. If the problem persists please contact us using the contact us form.

Rate and Review a Release

  • You must be registered and signed in to rate and review a release
  1. Visit the Downloads tab and choose the release you would like to rate
  2. Scroll down to the Reviews for this release section or click the link next to the current star ratings that says the number of "Reviews" to link down
  3. Click on the button that says Review this release
  4. In the lightbox that pops up, mouse over the white stars until you see the correct number of blue stars for your rating — one star is the worst rating, five is the best

    • Click Add Additional Files to add more than one file.
    • Select Mark as Recommended if this is your recommended file (there can only be one recommended file at a time).
  • For each file you want to remove from the release, perform the following:
    • Next to the file you wish to delete select one of the two choices, deleting or replacing the file. Replacing the file will retain the download count deleting will not.

5. Click Save to add the files to the release.

Note: There is currently a maximum file size limit of 200mb. Files larger than this will throw an error if you try to upload them.

Comments on Release Change Log

You can't add comments to the change log, but you can edit the description if you're a Coordinator or Developer on the project.

Remove Changeset

Unfortunately, Team Foundation Server does not support deleting a changeset. However we can do one of the following:

  • We can delete a file from all changesets if it contains personal identifiable information or security information.
  • We can delete the entire project (including Wiki pages, Releases, Discussions, etc) and then you can recreate the project so it has no changeset history at all.

If you would like us to take either of these actions then you can submit a request using our Contact Us form.

Undo Another User's Changeset

This can only be done by using the TF.exe command line client. See Source Control Clients for more information on the TF.exe command line client.

Here is a link with instructions on how to undo a checkout of another user: Undoing a checkout that belongs to another user

Continuous Integration

  • The CodePlex team has released the CodePlex source control block for continuous integration with your project using CruiseControl.NET. View complete documentation at CodePlexAPI.

  • Applying Pull Requests

Fork Actions on Change Set Listing Page

All fork actions are available directly on the change set listing page.

image ???

Creating Forks / Pull Requests

The following steps are applicable to all registered CodePlex users.

Step 1: Create a new Fork of a Project

  • Go to the Source Control tab of a Mercurial project.

  • Click on the “Create Fork” link.

  • Specify a name that will distinguish your intentions, and optionally enter in a description of what the fork is used for.

clip_image002

  • Once the fork has been created, you’ll be redirected to the “My Forks” view of that project.

  • At this point, you can toggle the view to see “All Forks” or “My Forks” (the toggle will only be visible if you have existing forks in the project).

clip_image004

Step 2: Fork Clone, Commit, and Push

  • On the page listing for the forks, you will see a Clone URL.

clip_image006

  • Use your favorite Mercurial tool (we recommend TortoiseHg), to create a local clone of the repository.

clip_image008

Since this is your repository, you have full capabilities of committing locally, and pushing changes back up to the central server. This is a key distinction for forks, as the changes in your fork ARE NOT pushed into the central project repository.

clip_image010

Step 3: Create a Pull Request

Once you have pushed all of your changes to your fork (as well as making sure you have pulled the latest changes from the central repository), you’re ready to create a pull request.

  • When viewing “My Forks”, you’ll see some actions.

  • Click on “Send Pull Request”, enter your comments and click “Send”.

clip_image012

  • At this point, your pull request is waiting to be applied by project coordinators or developers. Once they have applied or denied your pull request, you will receive an email with their comments.

Applying Pull Requests

The following steps are applicable to project coordinators or developers for a project only.

If you are a Mercurial project owner, and need to get access to unapplied patches, please contact us.

Step 1: Reviewing / Apply Pull Request

  • As a project contributor, when you visit the forks page, you’ll see that you have the ability to subscribe to pull request notifications.

  • When a user submits a pull request, you’ll receive an email with their comments and a link to the Fork.

clip_image014

  • Once a pull request has been submitted, you’ll want to pull those changes into your local project repository.

Note: It is recommended that you get fresh clone in case you wish to not accept the changes.

clip_image016

  • Once pulled, click the Refresh button in the Repository Explorer to see the new change set(s).

clip_image018

  • At this point, you should review the changes and determine if you’d like to accept them.

    • If you do not wish to accept the changes, you can simply delete your local repository and re-clone it.

    • If you do accept the changes, push them to the central project repository.

clip_image020

Step 2: Closing the Loop

No matter if you applied or declined the pull request, you should close the loop. This gives the user the reassurance that the pull request was noticed and acted upon.

To do this:

  • Visit the Forks page again. You’ll notice that we pop all pending pull requests on to the top so it’s easy to get access to them.

  • Find the pull request you just applied, and click “Apply Pull Request”.

  • Type a message and click Send.

clip_image022

Note: It’s courteous to give really good feedback when declining a pull request. The user is now able to send another pull request with new changes they’ve made to their fork.
